Wholesale Fuel Pricing in Florida — How Rack Rates Work

Understand exactly how wholesale fuel is priced — from terminal rack rates to your delivered cost. No hidden fees, no guesswork. BettyJet shows you every component of your fuel price.

The Basics

What Is a Rack Rate?

The rack rate is the wholesale price of fuel at a terminal loading rack — the physical point where tanker trucks fill up from a terminal's storage tanks. Every fuel terminal in the United States posts rack rates daily for each product they sell: ULSD, dyed diesel, regular unleaded, mid-grade, premium, E85, ethanol, jet fuel, and more.

These prices are published by industry pricing services, the most widely used being OPIS (Oil Price Information Service, owned by Dow Jones). OPIS collects pricing data from every terminal in the country and publishes daily rack averages, high/low ranges, and volume-weighted prices. The OPIS rack rate is the standard benchmark used by fuel brokers, distributors, retailers, and commercial buyers to price wholesale fuel transactions.

Rack rates fluctuate daily based on several factors: crude oil futures, refinery utilization rates, regional supply and demand, pipeline throughput, seasonal patterns (demand spikes in summer driving season and hurricane season), and terminal-specific inventory levels. This is why wholesale fuel prices change every day — and why real-time quoting matters.

How It Works

BettyJet's Wholesale Pricing Formula

Every BettyJet quote breaks down into four transparent components. No mystery markups, no bundled fees.

1

Rack Rate

The published terminal price for the fuel type and grade you are ordering. This is the OPIS-benchmarked wholesale market price on the day of your order. BettyJet sources from the terminal with the best available rack rate for your delivery location.

2

BettyJet Commission

A disclosed per-gallon commission that covers our brokerage services: supplier sourcing, carrier coordination, backup supplier assignment, documentation, and customer portal access. This commission is shown as a separate line item on every quote and invoice.

3

Applicable Taxes

Federal excise tax, Florida state fuel tax, and any local taxes applicable to your fuel type. On-road diesel and gasoline carry full tax obligations. Off-road (dyed) diesel is exempt from road taxes, saving approximately $0.36/gallon in Florida state tax.

4

Freight

The delivery cost from the terminal to your site, determined by distance, carrier type (bobtail vs. transport), and order volume. Freight is quoted upfront so there are no surprise charges. High-volume and recurring orders benefit from optimized freight rates.

Your Price = Rack Rate + Commission + Taxes + Freight

Every component visible on every quote. No hidden fees.

Terminal Sourcing

Terminal Basis: Why Location Matters

Florida has fuel terminals concentrated along its coastline — Tampa (Port of Tampa Bay), Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Jacksonville (JAXPORT), Port Canaveral, and Pensacola. Each terminal posts its own rack rates, which can vary by several cents per gallon on any given day based on local supply, refinery contracts, and transportation costs.

BettyJet sources from every major terminal in Florida. When you request a quote, we compare rack rates across all available terminals and factor in freight to your delivery location. Sometimes the closest terminal has the best total cost; other times, a terminal farther away posts a lower rack rate that more than offsets the additional freight. We optimize for your lowest delivered cost — automatically.

This multi-terminal sourcing model also provides supply redundancy. If one terminal is constrained (pipeline maintenance, tanker delay, allocation limits), we pivot to another terminal without missing your delivery window.

Volume Discounts & Contract Pricing

BettyJet offers tiered pricing based on order volume and frequency. The more you order, the lower your per-gallon commission. Volume tiers start at 500 gallons with full contract pricing available at 10,000+ gallons per order.

Spot ordersreceive the current day's rack rate plus standard commission. Contract customers can lock in commission rates for defined periods (monthly, quarterly, or annually), protecting against commission increases while still benefiting from favorable rack-rate movements.

Enterprise customers ordering 50,000+ gallons regularly receive fully negotiated rates with a dedicated account team, priority fulfillment, and custom delivery scheduling. See the wholesale fuel overview for our complete volume tier breakdown.

FAQ

Wholesale Fuel Pricing Questions

What is a rack rate in fuel pricing?

A rack rate is the posted wholesale price for fuel at a terminal loading rack — the physical point where tanker trucks load fuel from a terminal's storage tanks. Rack rates are published daily by pricing services like OPIS (Oil Price Information Service) and vary by terminal, fuel type, and supplier. The rack rate is the wholesale benchmark — it's the starting point for all commercial fuel pricing before broker commissions, taxes, and freight are added.

How does BettyJet's wholesale fuel pricing work?

BettyJet's pricing formula is transparent: Rack Rate + BettyJet Commission + Applicable Taxes + Freight = Your Total Cost. We source from every major terminal in Florida and quote based on the best available rack rate for your delivery location. The BettyJet commission is disclosed as a separate line item — there are no hidden fees, no fuel card surcharges, and no mystery markups.

How much can I save with wholesale vs. retail fuel?

Wholesale fuel pricing typically saves $0.15 to $0.40+ per gallon compared to retail gas station prices, depending on fuel type, volume, and market conditions. For a business ordering 5,000 gallons per month, this translates to $750 to $2,000+ in monthly savings. High-volume customers ordering 50,000+ gallons monthly can save even more with negotiated enterprise rates.

Do wholesale fuel prices change daily?

Yes — rack rates change daily based on crude oil prices, refinery output, regional supply/demand, and seasonal factors. BettyJet provides real-time quotes so you always know the current price before committing. Contract customers can lock in rates for defined periods to protect against daily price swings, while spot customers receive the current day's rack rate.

Are there hidden fees in wholesale fuel pricing?

Not with BettyJet. Our pricing model is fully transparent: you see the rack rate, the BettyJet commission, applicable taxes, and freight as separate line items on every quote and invoice. There are no fuel card surcharges, no administrative fees, no setup costs, and no minimum commitment penalties. What we quote is what you pay.
